Core and Pelvic Floor Restoration

It can be difficult to re-connect with our bodies after childbirth.  Even more so if issues like diastasis, prolapse or incontinence are still with us several months, or even years, after.   You may have been advised to keep doing pelvic floor exercises, even though they don't seem to be helping.  Maybe you've tried all the 'quick fixes' on instagram? Or perhaps you've been told to just put up with it as it's part of becoming a mother, or that the only way to improve is to have surgery.

However, there is another way.  Using education, breathing, relaxation, strengthening and yes, sometimes pelvic floor exercises too, I can help you re-connect with your body and reduce your symptoms.  I tailor our sessions specifically to you and what your body needs.  I also offer pre-natal Pilates.

Feel in control of your body again
Stability Ball and Stretching Band
I’ve maintained a lot more mobility and had much less physical discomfort during pregnancy than I expected, which I largely attribute to my sessions with Ely and the homework she’s given me. Her encouragement and advice on how best to maintain mobility has been invaluable.

Giselle's Story

Giselle came to me with a complicated history: 2 pregnancies, episiotomy, c-section, hernia repair, prolapse repair and diastasis surgery.  Despite the prolapse repair, it was returning and she felt out of control.  She was referred for further surgery.  We decided to work together and see what we could achieve with the fall-back of being on the surgery waiting list if still required.  We met for 8 sessions over about 4 months with homework in between sessions. These are her words at the end of our sessions:

"Meeting Ely has been a life-changing experience.  She has listened, offered advice, one-to-one personal support and provided excellent homework.

At the start I had no idea how the journey would progress, I have been guided and listened to and have reset my old guarding patterns and now have new default settings. I have a toolkit to dip into and have learnt to listen to my body.  I have achieved so much more than I thought was possible, so much so that I am discharged from the surgery waiting list as I can manage my symptoms thanks to the education and support that Ely has provided.

For any woman who is silently struggling or unsure if anything can be done to help all I can say is have a chat with Ely and see where it leads. I did and it has made a big difference to my health and I feel able to work with my body not against it."

?

What is Prolapse?

This is when the pelvic organs start to descend into the vaginal canal.  It can feel like a dragging or heavy sensation and can be a cause of back pain.

?

What is incontinence?

It doesn't necessarily mean you have no bladder control, but maybe reduced control in certain circumstances:

Stress incontinence is when there is leaking due to force - e.g. jumping, coughing

Urge incontinence is when you feel you may not make it to the bathroom in time.

?

What is Diastasis?

Also known as abdominal separation of the mid-line of the belly it is a perfectly normal part of pregnancy to accommodate a growing baby.  Post-partum, it will usually close naturally within about 6 months.  Doming or sinking at the midline may be seen during exercise.

What is a session like?

o No two sessions are the same, I fully tailor to your needs.  But in your first session expect:

  • Getting to know you and your goals.  I know some of this can be difficult to discuss, but I try to create a comfortable and safe space for us to talk.

  • I'll look at the way you stand, sit, move and breathe

  • Depending on what we are trying to achieve we will then start to develop a programme which may include:

    • education

    • relaxation

    • breathing

    • strengthing

  • Set homework.  Completing homework in between sessions is the key to success.  I usually only set 3 or 4 short exercises, but doing little and often will make a big difference.
